Twelfth Night Mumming Play

Twelfth Night Banner - Bishopsteignton Mummers

In come I...
The Bishopsteignton mummers were formed in 2000 to celebrate Twelfth Night and tackle contemporary issues.

The mumming plays hark back to the time of the crusades and present, in dramatic form, a plot between the forces of light and darkness. We have 2 plays that are selected and adapted each year to fit the plot. Details of this year's performance will be shown on the events page.

We welcome new mummers, musicians and anyone who can dance the Farandole!

Bishopsteignton Art Group

The Bishopsteignton Art Group (BAG) has vacancies for new members, so why not come along for a taster session - one of the group will act as your guide for the afternoon, and materials will be available for you to have a trial run. No experience is required. Our members' ability ranges from beginners to well seasoned artists, and we learn from each other as well as benefiting from periodical demonstrations by professional artists, and attending workshops. Going to the group on a regular basis will also encourage you to keep painting or drawing, which is the best way to make progress. So whether your only memories of painting date back to your school days, or if you are a lapsed painter who needs an incentive to start again, do join us!!

BAG meets every Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm at the Community Centre. Please phone Margaret King on 01626 776950 to arrange your first visit.

Bishopsteignton Outdoor Art Group

Rainbow WorrierT The Bishopsteignton Outdoor Art Group (BOAG) only has one rule and that is: 'if it stops being fun, we stop'. From humble beginnings in 2005, the group has produced a remarkable number of 'outside art' projects given that the members are all volunteers with limited time, no budget and allegedly little artistic skill. From the first project on The Hump making a giant willow wave with 'seaphenalia' woven in to commemorate the Year of the Sea, to a number of larger recycled art projects for TRAIL (www.trail.org.uk), we’ve had a lot of fun and consumed a lot of cake!

  • Road Kill 'Road Kill', a car made of squashed cans found by the roadside won the 'Best Community Project' award for TRAIL 2007
  • 'Rainbow Worrier' a trawler boat made out of 5,000 plaited plastic bags won the 'Public Choice' award for TRAIL 2008
  • 'The Hub' encampment of 5 large tepees made from 1,500 hub caps was exhibited at and purchased by the Eden Project in 2009
  • BOAG - Genetic Twist'Genetic Twist' a DNA double helix spiral was made out of over 6,000 CDs was created for 2010. It was exhibited on Teignmouth seafront and now resides outside the new Newton Abbot Hospital, lit up at night.
  • ‘The Butterfly Effect’ is our latest TRAIL exhibit made from mixed waste and sustainable willow. The butterflies are made from CDs and are, except one exotic which has crept in, based on local butterflies (tortoiseshell, common blue, orange tip, swallowtail).

BOAG - The Butterfly EffectWe’ve also painted 'beach huts' for the school, produced several art trails around the village for Christmas and hold ad hoc 'Art & Run' days where the group go to a site, such as a beach or woods, and make art out of whatever they can find there, letting the weather or tide naturally erase it.

The HubAnyone in the village or nearby surrounding area can join the group. No particular artistic skills required, but a sense of humour is desirable! Please contact Gill Greatorex 01626 779628 or e mail gillgreatorex@o2.co.uk.

Bishopsteignton Photography Club

The Bishopsteignton Photography Club was formed in Autumn 2009 by a small group of people and has already produced a body of work for the Village Treasures project that was exhibited in St John’s Church in October/November 2009. We meet once a month and have plans for talks and challenges to keep us having fun and learning about photography. Our aims are to:

  • Talk about the hobby and share skills, knowledge and interests
  • Learn about composition and camera technique
  • Organise photographic meets at local or more distant venues
  • Help develop skills in taking and processing of images
  • Share images for learning purposes

There may be more that people will come up with. We have no intention of being stuffy or formal about it and you don’t need to have lots of skills or fancy equipment (although you’re still welcome if you do). If you’d like to join us give David Mitchell a ring on 772097.  Atlernatively, find out more on our website.

Bishopsteignton Flower Club

The Flower Club is a very friendly club, which meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30pm in the Community Centre. Most months there is a demonstration of flower arranging, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits, and a chance to socialise. One monthly session per year is usually dedicated to a hands on session, but the main focus of the club is fun and relaxation - no flower arranging experience is necessary. At each meeting there is also a sales table, and a draw for the arrangement produced in the demonstration. The club has been running for over 22 years, and currently has almost 40 members. Subscriptions for the current year (starting in October) are £20. If you have an interest in flowers or flower arrannging and would like to join the Bishopsteignton Flower Club, pop along to one of the meetings at the Community Centre, or ring the club Chairman, Edna on 01626 779797 for more details.

Bishopsteignton Garden Club

The Garden Club holds regular talks at the Community Centre, on a variety of gardening related topics. These are open to non-members, for £1, to include coffee and biscuits.

Bishopsteignton Community Allotment Association

The Bishopsteignton Community Allotment Association was founded in March 2009 and is currently working towards establishing allotments within the village boundaries. The committee is focusing its efforts on petitioning Teignbridge District Council to provide some land for this purpose, and we hope to be able to report some positive news soon!

The aim of the Association is to establish allotments for all those who registered an interest at the meeting on March 30th 2009, as well as providing a community space, which could be an allotment for use by local school children, a sensory garden offering space for social gatherings. Until we have some land, we can't firm up the details, but the aim is for the community allotment space to be open to all in the village.

If you are interested in getting involved, you can contact us via email: allotments@bishopsteignton.org.uk.

You can also find out more about the association on the Bishopsteignton Community Allotment Association website.

Friends of Bishopsteignton School (FOBS)

FOBS (Friends of Bishopsteignton School) is a voluntary committee made up of parents, teachers and governors from Bishopsteignton School. FOBS aims to raise money for the benefit of the children at Bishopsteignton School by organising events such as the summer fayre and the Christmas fayre. Any money raised pays for additional things and treats that go beyond the school budget, such as play equipment, support for after school clubs, extras in the classroom etc. The FOBS committee meets every couple of months or so. If anyone is interested in joining or would like further information, please contact the FOBS chairman, Clarke Orchard, either by phone (01626 775010) or email or the FOBS Secretary, Susi Lamboll by email.

The group meets at the Bishopsteignton Methodist Church Hall (Fore Street) every Tuesday morning between 10.00 and 12.00 during term time. The sessions follow a similar pattern every week: free play time, craft activity, free play time, children's snack time, free play time, clear up and song time. The first week is free as a 'welcome week', thereafter the charge is £2 per family, per week, which includes refreshments and crafts.

SusBishop

SusBishop has formed in the village to start tackling some environmental issues which maybe, as individuals, we find a bit beyond us. Not only will there be a series of speakers to clarify issues such as energy and efficiency, ethical investments and rainwater harvesting but there will be direct action taken to make life a little easier for us, cheaper and greener. Initiatives such as a community car/sharing scheme, tools and machinery pool and local food production are all on the agenda.

The essence of the group is to improve community spirit and involvement and to help residents of Bishopsteignton move to a more sustainable lifestyle. We will be working with Teign Estuary Transition to keep in touch with our neighbouring towns.

See our website for more details of our activities and to keep up to date.

Check the Events listing for details of talks etc. If you would like to be more involved please contact Kate Yeo 772843.

Bishopsteignton Twinning Association

Bishopsteignton has been twinned with la Roche Maurice in Brittany (about 20km from Roscoff) since the early 1990s. Every other year, normally in May, about 60 people from the Bishopsteignton area travel to France and are, for a few days, the guests of French families in la Roche. On alternate years, families from Bishopsteignton are hosts to our French friends.

The twinning group has an active social life. In addition to the above, recent events have included quizzes, safari suppers, boules matches, a 1960s dance and a Burns Supper. We welcome non-twinners to our events.

We are keen to encourage young families to join us and meet our French counterparts. You don't have to speak French, although knowing a few words helps and is much appreciated. We look forward to welcoming anyone who might be interested in twinning to one of our events. Alternatively you can contact the chairman, Graham Rowe on 01626 778514, or via email, or for more details, you can download our brochure.

For more information about our French twinned town, visit la Roche Maurice's website.

Women's Institute

The Bishopsteignton Women's Institute meets on the first Thursday of every month, at 2:30pm in the Village Hall. New members are always welcome, as are visitors if you would like to come along and see what the local WI group is all about. The meetings kick off with a brief business meeting, followed by a guest speaker. Over the course of the year we enjoy a wide variety of talks, on topics such as The National Trust, local wildlife conservation, and many more.

The Bishopsteignton WI is affiliated to the national WI federation, and a delegate from the group attends the annual national conference. At a more local level, the Bishopsteignton group is affiliated with the Devon County WI, with its regional office in Exeter, which holds an annual carol service at Exeter Cathedral, which members are very welcome to attend. The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities, the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities, and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

The Bishopsteignton WI also has a crafts sub-committee, which meets monthly at the Methodist Church Hall. Other activities include games of skittles, which are played on Wednesday evenings (from 7.00pm) in the Village Hall. An afternoon of scrabble is on offer in case of inclement weather! Various fund-raising events are also held at regular intervals.

If you are interested in joining the local WI, please come along to a meeting, or call Venice James on 774760 for more information.

We have excellent speakers and the Club is a friendly non-political and non-sectarian organisation.
