Contributing to the community

There are a number of ways in which you can contribute to the local community. This page gives details of a number of voluntary organisations who are looking for assistance, and local collections of various items to raise funds for worthy causes. There are also details of schemes which villagers run amongst themselves to help each other out. If you know of another scheme that could be listed here, please contact us.

This page also details groups which are working towards improving the community and local environment.

Bishopsteignton Enhancement Group

Top of Bishops Avenue Improvement Scheme

The plans to enhance the village centre by making improvements to the top of Bishops Avenue are now well advanced. Villagers have given their strong support to the scheme during two public consultation exercises and the Bishopsteignton Enhancement Group have been actively seeking funding to allow the project to go ahead.

Plan for the layout of Bishops Avenue and Fore Street junctionBishopsteignton Parish Council initiated the project following the production of the Village Plan; this revealed that villagers felt the area at the top of Bishops Avenue was top priority for improvement. Although we’ve tried a number of different funding possibilities, schemes which involve highway improvements of any sort are primarily considered local authority responsibilities. We have received financial support in principle from Devon County Council, Teignbridge District Council and the Rural Aid Fund. The Parish Council has also agreed the scheme but we now need to raise some of the money from the Parish Council precept to ensure full partnership working across all three councils. We are looking to raise £30,000 this way which represents about 10% of the total cost.

This will involve a long term loan for the Council and a small increase in the precept. Council tax payers will pay less than 1p per day extra per household for the duration of the loan. We are still discussing details of the loan but as this facility is commonly used by councils and is for a relatively small amount, we envisage no difficulties.

Our next task is then to get the formal agreement of all the other funders with the aim of carrying out the work in 2010/11. We can then look forward to a much improved village centre! There are of course a number of other environmental issues which were raised in the village plan. We will be happy to look at other projects in the village in due course should villagers and the Parish Council wish us to.

Community Self-Help Schemes

Parking Space Rentals

Parking is always one of the hot topics in the village, with so many properties in the older parts of the village not having dedicated off-road parking provisions. If you have a parking space, garage or driveway that you do not use, would you consider renting it out to someone who lives locally? If you have a parking space you would consider renting, or if you are in need of somewhere to park your car and would like to get in touch with someone with a space available, please let us know and we will put parties in touch with one another.

Collections

Certain items are collected by local groups, either for recycling, or to raise money for local causes.

Newspaper Collection

Please leave your old paper (newspapers, magazines, envelopes etc.) out, by 10am, on the last Saturday of every month. The paper will be collected from your door and will be used to raise funds for Bishopsteignton Pre-School. Help the children of the village by recycling your old paper!

Donate a Book

If you have any books that you have finished reading, please consider donating them to the Village Hall. All books received will be made available to villagers, for a donation to Village Hall funds. Most books are then returned to the Hall to be passed on to another avid reader.

Volunteer

Lunch Club

The Lunch Club runs once a month, on a Wednesday, at the Community Centre. Volunteers are needed to help with setting up, serving lunch, and clearing up. Even if you can only commit to helping out once in a while, your support would be very welcome. If you are able to help, please phone Linda on 770007.
